i have HD of 320gb capacity. I have 5 partitions in it c-with windows 7,d,e,f and i-for installing linux mint. I want to use windows & Linux as dual boot. Is it possible to use partition i for linux that has 30gb space with logical ntfs file system without affecting windows & other partitions. How can I use partition ‘i’ for installing linux mint pls help me. I want windows7 running too.

@Milan – if you want to really dual boot (as opposed to run Mint in a virtual machine or from the Windows desktop, then you will need to let the Mint installer reformat the NTFS partition that is currently I: as ext3 or ext4.

Mint will be able to read the NTFS disks, and you can install Ext2IFS or Ext2Fsd on Windows to allow that to access the Mint partition (the former just does ext3, the latter should be able to do ext4 as well).

Your life will be simpler if you actually make two partitions in that space – one of 8G for the / filesystem and the rest for /home – because then it is much easier to keep your /home partition – where the vast majority of your Mint files are – safe. It is possible, though not easy, to make the /home partition NTFS but unless you have a really, really pressing need for that, don’t bother trying.
