This is Step By Step, Frame By Frame Instruction with image and text show you how to get Libre Office to start faster, and how to change storage formats.
If you use OpenOffice, you can change the settings by this guide.
Open the Libre Office word processor, in Linux Mint, Menu > Office > Libre Office Writer
When Writer opens, click on Tools and then select Options
Select Libre Office and from there Memory
Change the following settings, shown in the picture, 1st Number of steps from 100 to 30, 2nd Use for Libre Office from 20 MB to 128 MB, 3rd Memory per object from 5.2 MB to 20.0 MB, last tick the box Enable systray Quickstarter. (makes a shortcut to the bottom bar)
(NOTE: this Quickstarter can also cause that the Linux Mint wont shut down correctly, if so, do not tick it)
Next select Java.
Tick the box Use a Java runtime environment, and select Sun Microsystems Inc version 1.6.0_24 Last click OK, Its ready.
In the bottom bar you can find the Quickstarter icon, you will notice the boot speed!
Libreoffice storage formats
Writer easily reads Microsoft Word documents, and you can also save your work in Microsoft Word format, for sending to people still locked into Microsoft products. Libre Office can also open .docx files created with Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows or Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac OS X.
Saving in other formats, File > Save as
From Drop down, All Formats and select your file storage format, ex .doc
Asking when not saving in ODF format, Click Keep Current Format
Same file in two different formats
If you need to be sure that what you publish is viewable and looks exactly on every kind of reading device and platform, the “Export as PDF” (.pdf) feature generates a .pdf file. For example, curriculum vitae is good to exported as PDF format, this make sure that the recipient will receive your information.
Saving in PDF format, File > Export as PDF
Creat PDF Form, Export bookmarks, Click Export
You can also open Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, and can also save your work in Excel format for sending to people still locked into Microsoft products. If you only need to make your data readable, but on a wide range of devices and platforms, you can export to Portable Document Format (.pdf). Calc can read .xlsx files created with Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows or Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac OS X.
